Personality; Kainé is referred in-game as the "wild companion", often called problematic and unpredictable by other characters. She is surly and cold, with a mouth that could burn the ears off a sailor and a tongue sharper than her swords. As a child, she was timid and helpful, but years of horrid treatment from the residents of the Aerie planted a seed of bitterness in her heart. Then her grandmother was ruthlessly killed, and her mind became infected with the bloodthirst of the Shade that possessed her, Tyrann. Kainé developed a deep hatred of Shades, and, thanks to Tyrann's influence, an urge to slaughter them. She is strongly driven by her desire to avenge Kali and kill the giant Shade that crushed her. It certainly helps that all she really knows is how to kill, and it's what she's good at and what she enjoys. Socializing and making friends is just not her thing; Kainé is only here to kick ass and take names. She comes off as very uncouth and uncaring, aloof one moment and violent the next. She harbors a lot of pain, cynicism and anger, and a deep loathing of Shades that Tyrann continually laps up.

Kainé is a difficult person to become close to. She knows she is a harbinger of trouble and purposely distances herself from people; she has lived that way her entire life, and the only other human she regularly interacted with as a child was not an entirely socially normal person herself. Because of the way the villagers treated her, she is generally extremely mistrustful of others, preferring to avoid human contact as much as possible. She often comes off as cruel and antisocial, what with her lack of affability even toward Nier, the person most important to her. She's also quite a sight to see in a fight, slicing and dicing and drenching herself in blood without so much as blinking. It's easy to view Kainé as a battle-heardened, heartless swordsman.

Truth be told, a lot of Kainé's angry outbursts and closed-off, noncommittal responses are simply reactions to being unable to properly express herself. Tyrann himself stated that once her vengeance was had and her heart would gradually begin to soften, she would be finally be weak enough for him to overtake her body completely. Kainé rather likes not having to give up the reins and keeps her feelings at bay. Beneath the foul mouth and abrasive personality is a lonely, hurt girl who fears her own bloodlust and doesn't know how to respond to people showing they care. "Friend" was a word not often found in her vocabulary, and she's actually a little shy when people take a non-malicious interest in her or show her concern, often resulting in her withdrawing or reacting snappishly. Buried under her hostile and sometimes apathetic pretense is a good heart with a healthy dose of protectiveness. She's completely capable of caring for others, as evidenced by her big-sisterly affection for the young Emil, and while the thought of growing attached to someone frightens her, she's fiercely loyal to those who are important to her. She's also got something of a soft spot for and sympathizes with people who have been through hardship like her, and never hesitates to act as something of a big sister to those who need it. Maybe she's a bit abrasive at times, but she's a big woobie underneath it all.

It's difficult for Kainé to act like a decent, civil human being, but hey, she's got a lot on her shoulders. For years, she loathed herself, and for the most part she still does. Being half-Shade on top of her "cursed" hermaphrodism doesn't help matters any. Adding insult to injury, Kainé can understand and hear the cries of Shades as they are slain; she knows of their true nature, and that they are, in fact, sentient, but she's so convinced that every single one of them is a being of nothing but darkness and evil, she continues to kill them anyway. She is resolute in this; if there is any pity for the Shades, she never shows it, nor does she let on that they're not as mindless as they seem. It's a burden she bears alone, with Tyrann taunting her about it throughout her ordeal, as he does with everything else in her life.

All in all, Kainé is rude and something of a crazy ice queen, but she'll still put even a main character to shame with some of her flashy heroics and her innate sense of justice.
